Bad robots scraping a website
One of my clients emailed me last week and passed on an email from his hosting company who reported upwards of 18k visitors a day to his website.
The requests were coming through as if a robot had scraped the site for some relevant words and then constructed a fictitious email address based on using the home page full url e.g. https://www.websitesyork.co.uk/index.php and then adding to that a spurious suffix that the bot had randomly created.
This would have returned an unformatted Home page if a real user had keyed it in.
The risk was that this could escalate and potentially cause problems with the server where the site was located.
