Broken Image Checker in Chrome

Now go to a web page that you want to check in Chrome and at the top find the bookmark that you have just created and click on it. A pop up window will show the result.

Perhaps a better way is to use a website auditing tool which will check the whole site for problems. I use Website Auditor which has covers this in its Site Audit page:

So how do images get to be broken?

Some reasons may be obvious but others are not. The obvious ones are:

1. An image is warehoused and the whole warehouse folder gets moved for some reason and the original link to the image is no longer valid.
2. Or an image is linked to on another site and that site goes down or is re-organised and again the link becomes invalid.
3. Another obvious reason is if an image that has never been optimised and is several MB in size is being shown and then accessed from a device on a slow network it may never load in time.
4. There could be a problem at browser level stopping an image being shown
5. The image file has somehow become corrupted

Less obvious things have happened to me such as:

1. A few months ago I was using Rapidweaver with Stacks 4 and several times I'd open a project file and find that some of the images it previously contained in image wells had suddenly vanished. Sometimes it was just a single image or the images on one page but if I'd not noticed and re-published the whole site I imagine that the website on-line would be missing some images. Luckily the developer of Stacks 4 realised that there was a problem and I've not had that same issue occur now for several months working with Stacks 5. 
2. I have no idea why, but about a week ago I found a blog post listing from a few years ago with a missing image in the initial blog list screen. In order to correct this situation I had to rebuild the blog post by copying the live content into a new post and then deleting the old one. None of the other blog posts on that site were affected.

Other causes:

1. File permissions may somehow have been changed on the server so if you find broken images it may be worth checking these.

2. At an individual browser level, settings may get changed and block images so try different browsers on the same machine and see if there is consistency in the images being missing.
