What are Alt Tags?

Alt Tags are meta tags that are attached to images on a website. For sighted people, they will remain largely unseen as they are primarily a resource to be used for blind and partially sighted people who will use a screen reader when they access a website.

Alt tags only apply to images that are in the foreground, so using an image as a background image to a container of some kind doesn't allow for the possibility of adding an alt tag.

As accessibility is their primary purpose it is important for a web designer to ensure that all alt tags are supplied where appropriate.
