Why are broken links important?

If you have noticed that your website has suddenly dropped down the rankings there are many reasons why this might have happened and having broken links/missing resources is only one of them but it's worth periodically checking for broken links and if you are worried about your site's health then it is definitely worth checking.

Links and resources returning a 404 (status not found return code) are recognised by Google and other search engines and they may regard this status as an indication of a poorly maintained site, or a site that is not finished, or is unloved and is not being cared for adequately.

If you are a client of a website developer, you could ask your website developer to run periodic checks but it is a lot of work for them for multiple sites and it may be best if you can do it yourself, especially if you are the one who is adding new links into the site.

So why do links get broken?

It happens to most website owners. It certainly happens to me quite often. You might have inadvertently set up a new link in a blog post for instance and mistyped or mis-copied a URL when setting up a link, or you set up a link correctly but the page you were linking to has been changed, or the whole website may have been taken down.
