Factors that affect a website's ranking in search engines

There are many factors involved in getting a website to rank on search engines:

1. Maturity

This may sound like an excuse but it is a sad fact that in the world of website developers that the age or maturity of the domain name is a factor in determining a website's ranking position. In the world of the internet, age is seen as a good thing and it is reflective of the fact that you are more likely to have trust in an old established company which has been around for decades than you are to trust a company which has suddenly appeared out of nowhere overnight.

This can be frustrating both for the client who has had a website built and also for the web designer who has built the site. I always try and manage my customer's expectations as to how long it might be before a website begins to start ranking and when it might reach the first page.

The sooner you start a website, the quicker the day when it starts to rank well will come. Unless you already have a plan for the whole site it is a good idea just to start with whatever content you already have because undoubtedly you will review the site, look at competitor sites and think about ideas for content that you could add to yours.

When I talk about content I am talking about text content mostly. A site doesn't rank because of fancy widgets or impressive graphics. In certain cases, it may gather a following because of the images shown but this is certainly not the norm. Mostly a website will begin and continue to start ranking because of its text content. This content needs to be interesting and useful for the viewer to read. The text content needs to address a perceived problem or need that a prospective customer can engage with.

People browsing your site may be looking for answers that address a problem they have or they may be attracted to something on your site and want to learn more so that they can make a decision about getting in contact to find out more first-hand. Either way, you need well-considered text content, written in plain English without jargon that might be off-putting to some people.

Usually, the more text content you have, the better your site will rank.
